UN MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS – HOW DUBAI CARES IS MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE
With so many charities popping up all over Dubai, most of which require donations to support their cause, deciding which organization to support can be a difficult choice. After all, they all make a significant social contribution whether it’s to the environment, poverty reduction, helping children in need or assisting the disabled. As Muslims start to think about what good deeds they can do for others this Ramadan, we take a quick look at one Dubai Charity, Dubai Cares and how they are working to improve access to education throughout the developing world.
Dubai Cares was founded by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 2007 with the aim of improving access to primary education for children in the developing world. By eliminating the underlying causes that prevent children’s access to quality primary education, Dubai Cares is assisting families throughout the developing world and changing one life at a time. With millions of children in the developing world unable to attend school, Dubai cares has been focusing on the factors that can prevent a child from getting a proper education; infrastructure, health and nutrition, quality of teachers and water and sanitation in the following countries; Bangladesh, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cambodia, Chad, Comoros Islands, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Laos, Maldives, Mauritania, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Niger, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Palestinian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon, Sudan, Yemen and Zambia. To help support the work of Dubai Cares, companies and individuals will shortly be able to make a donation online or can offer their skills and expertise and work as a volunteer.
In response to the UN Millennium Development Goals that basic education is a fundamental human right; Dubai Cares is making progress around the world. To date they have partnered with international aid agencies, reached more than 4 million children in the developing world, built and renovated over 2,072 schools, trained over 22,00 teachers, established parent teacher associations, created 489 libraries and distributed more 1.3 million books written in local languages.
