131 MILLION DOLLAR BABY! CRISTIANO RONALDO!
It is a well know fact that sports players earn unimaginable amounts of money, yet whether these extortionate fees and salaries are right is questionable. In this day and age, just how much should sports players get paid? When talking about crazy money paid for football players, one particular football star comes to mind; Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. Known as one of the greatest players of all time, Real Madrid’s offer to Manchester United of 80 million pounds for Ronaldo was a world record. It is offers like this that indicate that things in the world of sport have gotten a little out of hand, even more so today in the aftermath of the economic crisis. Yet, issues such as this have been discussed for many decades, with little evidence that things are changing. In the 1996 film, Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise), a sports agent working with one athlete, Rod (Cuba Gooding Junior), is told that a career in football is for 20 years maximum and thus they need to be paid more, hence the famous yelling telephone conversation between Jerry and Rod that culminated in the famed “Show me the Money!” So, until clubs stop paying these fees, players will continue to ask, believing that they really do deserve such extravagant wages.
